Offshore Royal Bank Of Scotland
The market town of Dumfries, known as the Queen of the South, lies in southwest Scotland, on the River Nith and a few miles inland from the Solway Firth. Its location in the frontier lands between England and Scotland (it is less than 25 miles from the border) mean that its history has often been marked by conflict and turbulence both from within Scotland and between Scotland and England.
The Early History of Dumfries
Although the southwest of Scotland is rich in prehistoric remains, there is very little information on early settlement on the site of Dumfries itself. The Romans were certainly present in the area on their various incursions north of Hadrian’s Wall but left little archaeological evidence. Information from Dumfries Museum, however, suggests that there has been a settlement on the site for longer than the 800 years since the town was first represented in the written record.
The initial settlement was probably confined to the highest part of the present town centre. This would have been a ridge or dry ground surrounded by bogs which, along with the River Nith, in whose curve the ridge lay, would have provided an excellent defensive location. There would probably have been a village in the area by the 1100s, at a time when Galloway was part of a separate kingdom rather than Scotland as a whole.
