USAA Membership is Open to Active, Retired and Now Honorably Discharged Officers and Enlisted Members of the U.S. Armed Forces
On November 5, 2009, General Josue (Joe) Robles Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer of USAA posted a notice on the company website announcing that membership in the elite company would open to a new segment of the military population. Military members who have separated honorably are now eligible for membership.
In 1996 membership was extended to members of the enlisted ranks. Changes have not been as rapid as some would have liked. Robles justified the timing, citing the need for incremental steps so that services would not be impaired rather than opening the membership floodgates and risking a deterioration in services.
