The Adjustment Bureau is a directorial debut for screenwriter George Nolfi who has penned some of the most high-octane action films of the early 2000s, including Ocean’s Twelve (2004), The Sentinel (2006) and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). Matt Damon was the obvious choice for the lead in this movie, since he starred in two of the above-mentioned movies.
Damon is one of the hardest-working actors in the business at the moment. In the past two years, he has starred in two Clint Eastwood films, Invictus (2009) and Hereafter (2010), as well as playing a supporting role in the Coen Brother’s Western homage True Grit (2010). His role in Invictus earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Emily Blunt, an actress who doesn’t shy away from work either, plays his love interest here. However, Blunt’s last three outings have left a lot to be desire for the young actress starring in critical flops like Gnomeo and Juliet (2011), Gulliver’s Travels (2010) and The Wolfman (2010).
Introduction
The Adjustment Bureau begins with a montage depicting the meteoric of rise of politician David Norris (Damon). We are told that he is the youngest politician to be elected to Congress. A highly ambitious young man, Norris is, however, prone to bad behaviour stemming from his troubled youth. He is losing at the polls in his current election campaign and is practicing his losing speech in a hotel men’s room when by chance Elise (Blunt) walks out of one of the cubicles, apparently hiding from security after getting caught crashing a wedding.
