On the Banks of Plum Creek is the fourth novel in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s acclaimed Little House series of novels. It follows on from the well known title Little House on the Prairie, and continues the story of the Ingalls family after they have been moved on by government decree from Indian territory. The family has now settled at Plum Creek, in Minnesota , and try their luck at farming wheat, with some tragic and heartbreaking results. Yet these setbacks only dampen the Ingalls’s spirits temporarily, and the family soon finds the resilience needed to continue their struggle for a better life.
The Little House Series of Novels
Laura Ingalls Wilder began writing the Little House series about pioneering life in America when she was in her sixties. After a hard life spent trying to earn a living off the land, then losing money on the stock market crash of 1929, she decided to try her hand at novel writing. This was not Wilder’s first attempt at writing. She had been a columnist for the Missouri Ruralist between 1911 and 1920. In 1930 she showed her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, an early draft of Little House in the Big Woods.
By 1932, Wilder had her first novel in print, and today her novels have been translated into 40 languages. The aim and purpose of writing the novels for Wilder was to recall for present generations what life was like before the modern age. The Little House novels achieve this perfectly, giving much uncanny and original detail of rural life. It is this diary like aspect, formatted into striking fictional narratives, that makes the Little House novels so successful and highly enjoyable today.
